Menopause knocks on the door. And, what do we do now?

Menopause is a natural transitional period in a woman's life. It occurs as a result of reduced production of sex hormones in the ovaries. It is also known as the "change of life" because it marks the end of the reproductive phase and refers to the last menstrual cycle a woman has. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. In short, menopause is the natural conclusion of a woman's menstrual cycle.

The timing of a woman's entry into menopause depends on genetics and hereditary factors. There is a high likelihood that you will enter menopause around the same age as your mother. Some studies have shown that smoking can be a contributing factor to an earlier onset of menopause, as smoking has a negative impact on ovarian function.

Regardless of when menopause actually occurs, women often experience changes as much as seven to eight years before menopause, when the production of female sex hormones begins to decline.

Menopause is certainly characterized by changes in hormonal status, and the decreasing levels of estrogen leave their mark on the brain, skin, muscles, and emotions.

The symptoms characteristic of menopause include:

  • sudden hot flashes
  • night sweats
  • sleep disturbances
  • weight gain
  • memory problems
  • anxiety
  • mood swings
  • changes in bone density
  • urinary problems and incontinence

This is a time when a woman MUST put herself first.

Menopause brings about changes that truly impact the quality of life, but they can be alleviated by maintaining a regular daily routine, adopting a nutritious diet, taking vitamin supplements, getting adequate rest, practicing relaxation techniques, and pursuing new interests. For most women, menopause coincides with the time when their children are growing up and becoming independent, leading to a loss of their role in the child-rearing process. If new interests or purpose are not found, something called the 'empty nest syndrome' may occur, further intensifying feelings of anxiety and depression, making a woman feel like she's on an emotional rollercoaster.

The reason behind this is that most women build their identity based on quality relationships with others, primarily caring for others. Until middle age, a woman's energy is focused on taking care of others, with much less attention given to self-care. Nothing can hit a woman deeper, both physically and mentally, than what she experiences through her relationships with loved ones.

In middle age, a woman's attitude toward others changes. People who were once the center of life's meaning, support, and fulfillment suddenly lose their shine. A woman begins to see them from a different perspective.

Creating a new identity in middle age requires sensitivity and respect for one's uniqueness.

How to ease the symptoms?

  • Avoid alcohol, smoking, and stressful situations (at least make an effort to do so).
  • To alleviate hot flashes, try to avoid potential triggers such as spicy food, caffeine, tight or synthetic clothing, and overly warm environments.
  • Ensure your diet is rich in calcium, vitamin D, and proteins.
  • Reduce refined sugars and processed foods, and increase your intake of fruits and vegetables.
  • Don't skip meals; instead, opt for more frequent, smaller meals.
  • Drink an adequate amount of water (eight to twelve glasses of water daily).
  • Spend time outdoors, and even better, engage in physical activities that you enjoy (such as walking).

Menopause is not the beginning of something negative. On the contrary, it is the most beautiful stage in a woman's life. During this time, a woman is mature, free, full of self-confidence, and completely self-aware. Since it occurs around the middle of one's lifespan, it should be seen as a significant decluttering and cleansing of unnecessary things and influences.

So, embrace menopause as the beginning of a new life phase that lies ahead of you. Note: This content is for informational purposes and is not a substitute for medical advice.
