Vaginal infection: every woman's nightmare!

Have you ever left a gynecologist's office after a regular check-up without receiving treatment for a vaginal infection? If you belong to the group that answers YES, then congratulations, you are very fortunate.

Unfortunately, the reality is that the majority of the answer is NO because the frequency of vaginal infections is one of the most common reasons for visiting a gynecologist.

Vaginal infections are very common, and every woman will experience some type of infection at least once in her life. They can be recognized by their characteristic odor and changes in the color of the discharge.

There are several reasons for the occurrence of vaginal infections, let's try to list a few of the most important ones:

  • Inadequate and aggressive use of intimate hygiene and care products.
  • Douching the vagina
  • Pregnancy
  • Taking oral contraceptives
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Taking antibiotics
  • Unprotected sexual relations and frequent change of partners
  • Wearing clothes that are too tight

Considering the cause of the infection itself, there are various diseases and conditions that can occur due to a vaginal infection, and problems can also occur during pregnancy.

What are the types of vaginal infections?

  1. Bacterial vaginal infection

Bacterial infection is primarily recognized by a very unpleasant odor of vaginal discharge, and it occurs when the number of bacteria in the vagina increases rapidly due to one of the aforementioned reasons. The color of the discharge can be white or whitish. As with any bacterial infection, these infections are treated with antibiotics.

  1. Fungal vaginal infection

The most common causative agent is the fungus Candida albicans, and it is also the most common form of vaginal infection. Similar to bacterial infections, the infection occurs when the number of fungi in the vagina increases rapidly. Fungal infections are characterized by severe itching, a burning sensation, redness, and a thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge. They are treated with antifungal medications and dietary changes, specifically a low-carbohydrate diet, as carbohydrates are the primary food for the growth and development of fungi.

  1. Viral infection

Viral infections are most commonly caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) or Genital Herpes Simplex Virus. We recognize it by the growths - warts, condylomas in the case of HPV or by painful moist sores on the vagina in the case of Herpes Simplex Virus. Treatment of viral infections mainly involves managing symptoms with specific antiviral medications, as is the case with genital herpes. For HPV infection, the treatment involves removing warts/condylomas.

  1. Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is an infection caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis and is classified as a sexually transmitted disease (alongside chlamydia and gonorrhea). The causative agent thrives in a moist environment, so transmission is not excluded through a wet towel, bathing sponge, or shared clothing. Symptoms include itching, vaginal redness, and profuse yellow-green discharge with a very unpleasant odor. Treatment involves medication therapy, and both partners must be treated.

It is essential to respond to the first symptoms of any vaginal infection to prevent various health issues and avoid worsening the condition or transmitting the infection to a partner.

When is it necessary to visit a gynecologist?

When symptoms of discomfort in the intimate region persist, when there is a change in the appearance of the discharge, bleeding, pain during urination or sexual intercourse, changes on the vagina, or when an unpleasant odor is present, it is essential to act immediately and consult a gynecologist.

Untreated vaginal infections can cause serious health problems in women.

Therefore, dear ladies, be cautious, and we recommend regular visits to the gynecologist!
